About Me
Hi! I’m Kathy Halim, a designer/artist based in Providence, Rhode Island. I am Chinese-Indonesian and lived my whole life in Jakarta, Indonesia. I enjoyed art since I was a child, but only started taking it more seriously in the tenth grade. I enjoy travelling and discovering different cuisines, and I incorporate them into a lot of my work. I’m also very passionate about sustainability in Indonesia, and I use my artwork to express my feelings concerning the impact of pollution.
My work centers on research and meaning-making. This blog documents how my artwork develops–from early sketches and ideations to fully fleshed out concepts and medium experimentation. Rather than focusing only on the finished pieces, I also explore how ideas are built through writing and storytelling. My practice is interdisciplinary, often drawing from anthropology, psychology, history, and environmental sciences to share what is important to me.
Alongside my studio work, I include interviews I conducted as part of my research on Indonesia’s art industry to shape how I imagine my future in the arts. This blog serves as a space to think through ideas, trace processes, and reflect on why and how art is made.
